What they call a "steel" finish is really polished chrome, which was exactly what I wanted. Installed easily using enclosed instructions, which included a drilling template.

I had these great oak doors from a job gone wrong. They were pre-drilled for standard locks so the usual pocket door hardware would not work. This hardware is perfect for this situation since I used both doors as pocket doors in my garage remodel. I would have given 5 stars, but beware if a teenager slams the door with the lock extended (locking unit only) you may end up replacing -- ours broke. That is the only drawback and it's mostly human error. If you have a nice door with a lock hole in it and want to use it as a pocket door, this is a great choice -- locking and non-locking.

Controlled Access to Your Home With your own personal code, you can enter your home with just a few simple pushes of a button—and you can easily and securely lock it with just one. In addition to personal code settings, you can assign a temporary code to whoever needs one—in-laws, babysitters, dog walkers, household help—and delete it when you see fit. The SmartCode features setting options that you can control via a panel of switches on the back of the lock. Customize your SmartCode settings by moving the switch to the appropriate on or off position. Switch one enables the LED light to blink (green for unlocked, red for locked); the second switch enables the auto-lock feature (automatically relock the door 30 seconds after unlocking); and the third switch enables beeping (on functions performed or keypad touched). Installation is easy—only a screwdriver is needed—and the deadbolt operates on four AA batteries (sold separately) so no hard wiring is required. Operation is also simple: to lock, press the lock button just once; to open, just enter the code on the keypad and the deadbolt will automatically retract. I bought the kwikset smartcode pb deadbolt as a gift to my wife. We are always looking for the key. The installation into an existing baldwin deadbolt took less than 15 minutes. I was able to program the two codes easily. My issue is with the quality of the unit. The outside seems like a nice brass finish. The inside is a brass coated plastic. When I opened the box, I saw the unit had finger prints on the finish. I was not able to remove these. Within two weeks the unit has reset itself and did not accept the codes that had been working. I have had to reset the codes twice. A third time and it comes off the door. I bought the kwikset because of the $20 rebate and cost was $30 less than competing devices. My suggestion is to look at the other units. The cost is not enough to put up with the quality and unit resetting.

I live alone and would be locked out if I lose my key. So, I decided to install a deadbolt with a keypad to resolve that concern. When I started searching for a keypad lock I came across the bumping issue. With a lot of sites selling bump keys, they have become really easy to get. Before long they will be very common on the streets. The internet has numerous videos of bump key opening locks as quickly as with a regular key. This is a problem that can only get bigger. So, I decided to get a bump-proof lock.
I selected the Kwikset model 99090-002. It is the best bump-proof lock that I could find that use both a keypad and key. I considered the Schlage BE365PLY619 which has a much more solid construction. But, it is very susceptible to bumping.
I now have the Kwikset electronic deadbolt installed. Its' ok, does the job. But, it has a really cheap plastic feel to it. While the outside part of the lock is metal, the inside part is plastic and feel really... Read more

The lock seems great for the first few months (you'll note that most of the reviews were written soon after purchase). However, within a year, the motor that retracts the lock burned out on one of my locks, and the cylinder gave up the ghost as well, so the key didn't work either. The second lock that I purchased at the same time just lost its electronic mind --- it was mechanically okay, but it wouldn't reset or take a new combination. Like most Kwikset products, the construction is just too cheesy. The keys, for example, are so thin that they'll actually bend. I'd avoid this product unless you intend to replace the locks every year or so, and be sure to have another way to get into the house if both the electronic and mechanical mechanisms fail, as happened to me.

I actually purchased 2 of these at my local hardware store... good products. the finish and action of the lever is great... I did have one problem with one of them though...it actually re-keyed itself after about 2-3 months of use! Because I no longer had the receipts I just started leaving it unlocked when I was not at home... I called customer service today- explained the situation. They are sending me out a new lock cylinder pretty much no questions asked- I think I was on the phone all of 2 minutes. So if you have an issue, don't hesistate to call them!

I originally bought this handle to replace our front door handle when we had the house painted 6 months ago. I've liked it so much that I'm getting another for the back door. It is very sturdy feeling and the ability to change the keying on the lock is really easy and amazing. It allowed me to get just the front door lever first without changing my other locks and now I can add the second door again.
I went to the local hardware store and compared it with lots of other levers from many manufacturers. The Kwikset re-keying feature for a good price made it the winner over some other manufacturers. On the front door, I also was able to get a matching deadbolt without re-keying. The reason I chose this lock over other Kwikset locks is that the lever is a bit thicker with smooth edges. It doesn't have sharp edges and is easy to grip. The action is very smooth.
